Tiago's 5th Birthday

If you ask my kids what happened for Tiago's 5th birthday, I think they'll all tell you that Tiago was stung by a bee.  It's funny what parts of reality become history, but the rest of the details of that day have fallen by the wayside in their minds.  

I think I snapped this picture of the kitchen the night before Tiago's birthday.  What a disaster.  I hate when my house looks like this.  But those cakes... :)

Tiago woke up to a bunch of balloons falling on him.  He was very confused, but also delighted.

After school, he had two friends from his Primary class come over to play and eat dinner.  It's always hard trying to celebrate a birthday right after moving somewhere new, but I'm glad he had these boys he could celebrate with.  Less ended up being more.  They played so well together.

Hyrum took them in the backyard to play soccer, and the ball got kicked over the fence.  All five kids walked to the side of the yard to get it back;Tiago was in front and we didn't know there was a beehive on the back of our fence.  He got stung and started screaming inconsolably.  Everyone ran as quick as they could into the house.  I think his friends were a little unsure what to do, but of course everyone was interested in what a bee sting looks like. Tiago was in a lot of pain, and it put a damper on the celebration for about 30 minutes.  No one wanted to play outside after that!

I made Tiago's favorite foods for dinner-- green beans and meatloaf.  It occurred to me right before we ate that other five-year-olds probably wouldn't eat that, so I made some french fries.  I was right-- one of the boys went home and told his mom we ate weird food. haha  But Tiago is a fan!

He received some great presents-- a few lego sets, drawing supplies, and a real camera. 

It's hard to believe Tiago is five!  He is still doing Pre-k, and will enter Kindergarten next year right before turning 6. But all this pre-school has made him one smart cookie.  He's reading in Spanish, and reads pretty well in English, too.  He is playful and silly, constantly looking for ways to help me.  We joke that he has an anger management problem-- he explodes really easily and does whatever he can to get a reaction.  But he is also the world's best apologizer.  He apologizes quickly and sincerely and goes right back to normal.  He plays nicely with his sisters-- they play super heros and pirates and all kinds of imaginative games.  Luckily he rarely comes into our room at night, so that's a huge improvement from last year when he tried to sneak in nightly.  While he used to eat like a bird, in the last 6 months he found his appetite and eats quite a bit now.  He doesn't eat hot chocolate every day, but still loves it.  On a paper they did at school, he wrote that his favorite foods were rice, eggs (boiled, and preferably just the white part) and cereal.  That's fairly accurate!

Over the last year we have worked through several chapter books together-- mostly Roald Dahl books.  Tiago loves Star Wars and Legos, and especially playing futbol with Papa.  Hyrum has trained him to eat apples right down the core.  He learned to ride a (Star Wars) scooter, and likes to ride it to/from school. 

We can't imagine our family without Tiaguito.  He is really a joy and a great first child.
